COFFEE HOUSE GROUP … The Coffee House Group is an opportunity for you to discuss the literature deeply with your peers. Your group should be small enough to encourage participation, but large enough for multiple opinions. Here are some rules to go by:
Everyone MUST read the works in question before attending the group, and be prepared to discuss them in depth.
Anyone in the group can disagree with another member of the group for any reason--even (and especially) if that is not their particular perspective. Playing "devil's advocate" is appropriate and fun.
Anything that is said in the group stays in the group--except for reporting to Dr. K. There will be no talking about another student because they chose to take an unpopular opinion. This group must be a "safe zone" where you can play with ideas--even controversial ideas.
Some suggestions for opening the discussion:
Pope considered what he was doing to be significant because he discussed important societal and cultural issues that were "above" those of the individual. Rousseau believed the individual was everything. If you were to categorize Pope and Rousseau into modern political parties, which ones do you think they would belong to? Was the answer what you thought it would be?
If you were to "cast" the parts of Rousseau and Pope with modern actors--who would they be, and why?
If Pope and Reousseau were to debate the merits of Neoclassic vs. Romantic--what would they say? How would they defend their position?
PLEASE LIST THE MEMBERS OF YOUR GROUP THAT WERE PRESENT BELOW, AND TELL ME WHAT YOU DISCUSSED AND HOW IT WENT.

-----In studying the works of Rousseau and Pope I determined the difference between the two authors and their works. Rousseau was considered one of the first writers for romanticism in the 1800s. His works depicts an enthusiasm for nature, they appeal to his emotions, have hieghtened sensation, emotional extremes, dramatic compisition, and they focus on everyday life. His works of New Heloise,Émile,Social Contract, andConfessions all share the litarary theme of romanticism. Pope is considered an author of neoclassicism in the 1700s. His works reflect the enlightenment ideals of logic/reason, it uses sarcasim to attack its assaliant, and it represents a position of thought.
