The Coffee House Group is an opportunity for you to discuss the literature deeply with your peers. Your group should be small enough to encourage participation, but large enough for multiple opinions. Here are some rules to go by:

  1. Everyone MUST read the works in question before attending the group, and be prepared to discuss them in depth.
  2. Anyone in the group can disagree with another member of the group for any reason--even (and especially) if that is not their particular perspective. Playing "devil's advocate" is appropriate and fun.
  3. Anything that is said in the group stays in the group--except for reporting to Dr. K. There will be no talking about another student because they chose to take an unpopular opinion. This group must be a "safe zone" where you can play with ideas--even controversial ideas.

Some suggestions for opening the discussion:

  • What was the historic significance of this work? How did it impact history

  • What do you think is the most important aspect of the work?

PLEASE LIST THE MEMBERS OF YOUR GROUP THAT WERE PRESENT BELOW, AND TELL ME WHAT YOU DISCUSSED AND HOW IT WENT.

GROUP 1-

KELLY STROUGHTON. TRAVIS HOBBS. DIAMOND MCBURROWN. NATAJAH HAWKINS.JOVANNA ROBINSON. JAMELAH PLATO. IVYONNE HARRIS

--- In our group we discussed Frederick Douglas and his accomplishment, we learned how that Frederick was an American social reformer, orator, writer and statesman. After escaping from slavery he became a leader of the abolitionist movement, gaining note for his dazzling oratory and incisive antislavery writing.

Group 2- Vernique Anthony I was not in class when groups were assigned but I discussed Fredrick Douglas with another student that is not in our class.

In my discussion we discussed who Frederick Douglas was as a person. The Narrative of Frederick Douglas opened our eyes on slavery and the things slaves had to endure just gain freedom as a race. Frederick Douglas fought for his fellow African Americans after escaping slavery and gaining freedom he became an abolitionist. We also discussed how his work impacted history which it did in a big way. Fredrick Douglas work gave us an insight on slavery and he let us in a mind of a slave which I believed made his work so insightful.
